The German Alphabet is an independent educational website. It is not affiliated with Duden, the Council for German Orthography, DIN, the Goethe-Institut or any government body.
Educational information only
Our pages explain German letters, pronunciation and spelling for learners. They are not a substitute for a qualified teacher, an official dictionary or a certified translator. For exams, official documents or legal names, follow the relevant official rules.
Pronunciation and audio
Audio is produced by your browser’s speech engine, not recorded by us. Quality and accent vary between devices. IPA and English approximations are simplified guides; regional pronunciation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland varies.
Keyboard and software instructions
Shortcuts and settings for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and other software can change with updates. We check them when we write a page, but cannot guarantee they work on every version.
Historical scripts
Our Fraktur, Kurrent and Sütterlin guides help you get started reading old documents. For important genealogical or legal records, consider a professional transcription.
