The German Alphabet is a free reference for anyone learning to read, say, spell or type German letters. It covers all 30 letters of the German alphabet, the umlauts Ä, Ö and Ü, the Eszett ß, German pronunciation, and the older scripts such as Fraktur, Kurrent and Sütterlin.
What you will find here
- A page for every letter, with its German name, sound, example words and spelling-alphabet code words.
- Free tools: a talking alphabet chart, a spelling-alphabet speller, an umlaut converter, a Fraktur text generator, a number-to-words converter and a listening quiz.
- Clear guides to umlauts, ß, pronunciation, old German handwriting and first German words.
How we write
We check facts against primary sources where they exist, such as the Council for German Orthography, Duden, DIN and the Unicode Consortium, and we link to them on each page. Pronunciation is given in IPA with a plain-English approximation. When sources disagree, we say so.
The audio on this site uses your browser’s built-in German voice. Voices differ between devices, so treat them as a guide and compare with native speakers when you can.
